Boxy: What Features Would You Like To See?

Unlike my previous Wordpress theme Word Press’d I shall be approaching my next theme design in a different way.. the proper way.

Instead of just designing into the theme what I personally find useful (on that note, I have got a few great features planned already) I want your feedback on features you found very useful in other themes you may have used. I am also open to the idea of new features you’d like to see in a theme that you would find incredibly useful and that could mean a reduction in plugins.

Market Research

As all good writers know, market research is a key factor in getting all the information to assemble a great in-depth post.. so why is this different for layout design? I can only assume its not..

In response to this post I’d love to get some feedback on what you look for in a website theme on all levels as a way of trying to establish some of the key features looked for in a Wordpress theme. This includes frontend and backend features built into the theme.

For example..

I find “Edit” links present on post very useful in case I quickly want to edit some dodgy wording or fix a link.

Boxy: The Theme So Far

In order to meet the high standards set in today current mine-field of quality (and poor) Wordpress themes I need to know exactly what you look for in a theme. With the help of you I hope to turn an almost finished design into a highly powerful, easy to use, great looking theme.

The vast majority of the design is complete but Im looking for any areas I can further improve and customise to fit in perfectly with current web standards and make to make your blogging experience as simple and as quick as possible.

As a thanks the two best idea’s put forward will each receive 100 entrecard credits.

Now get those gears grinding!..

Thanks for the help

I think pre-defined 125×125 banner widget on sidebar will be great addition

and quick submit to social bookmarking site is what every blog publisher want in his theme

or something like Problogger.net’s theme

where it ask for DIgg or save to del.icio.us, subscribe to RSS Feed and leave comment

It’s a nice idea first, to ask the readers for the features of the theme.
If you ask me for features i can tell you a lot as below

1. advertisement slot
125*125(6)in the sidebar (3 in each row)
468*60 (2)in the header and footer
2. must be three column theme…
3. widgetised footer
4. email subscription box
5. “Featured post” section at the top.
6. support for plugins such as
wp-page navi - no more “previous page” or “next page” links,
popularity contest - at the end of each post,
wp-post views- below all post titles,
7. social bookmarking buttons
8. a place in top for the feedburner feed widget
9. use buttons for read more links
10. a theme options page to control the advertisement from the admin backend..

If you leave me i can go on telling many features…
(one small request- Please increse the size of your comment box)

Here is my suggest.
- Magazine style
- White background
- Sidebar width should be 300px because it is fitted well with 300×250 Google Adsense and 2 columns 125×125 banner ad

:)

@arun
Im just gonna go over yours.

1. advertisement slot - yes
2. must be three column theme… no, hell no
3. widgetised footer - acceptable but not needed.
4. email subscription box - yes, but it can always be added yourself
5. “Featured post” section at the top - yes
6. support for plugins such as - it shud really have support for all plugins you want to use, but if it cant be done, can be done another time.
7. social bookmarking buttons - just use the share this plugin.
8. a place in top for the feedburner feed widget - just do it normal code and enter your feed burnerID
9. use buttons for read more links - whats the different in txt?
10. a theme options page to control the advertisement from the admin backend - would be good to see.

I hadn’t tried lots of themes but I like the one I am currently using for one thing - it kinda consists of blocks.

I can easily add something. Or remove something. Or change place where it is displayed.

It probably isn’t thing that people who look for click-use want. But such flexibility is great for people like me who want to experiment.

@Rarst
Yea, click use want is pretty cool. Sidebar widgets would do the trick, if you didnt no how to change the index, or single post or soemthing like that im sure, its easy searched on google or ask it as an email to jamie or me i guess, i know a bit about wordpress now, just been using it too long i guess. But hey… explain in detail.. or is “click-drag-done” what you mean ? =)

@Anto
hai, I am glad you like my ideas about ads, featured post and a theme option page.
Regarding
widgetised footer-
I ask for this because we can use it to show recent post, popular post, links and top commentators in along the full width of the theme in footer rather than using it in a dynamic sidebar tabs which most of the users wont try to look..
It also increase the look and space for the sidebar.

email subscription box-
as you said, i can easily create it but not all.it is useful if it is coded default with the theme (no body is going to say NO for this email subscription as many of the readers exist who still dont know what is rss )

feedburner widget-
I can also create this very easily and place in sidebar.but i want it top of the sidebar with more design (in that we can change the feedburner id)(atleast we can reduce one widget)

Read More Buttons-
for example you can take the homepage of blog2life which has [...] as the read more link which is not even visible clearly (due to colour combinations)for the first time user, they even think that the post is over.but if have a readmore button it’s very much useful…

plugins-
the above plugins can be easily activated.but we have to place the codes for all plugins in each theme file such as single.php, featured.php,index.php
that takes so much time and not all can do it(many are not good to place the code correctly in the place…finally leads to breaking of theme files)
(another small request- Please install the subscribe to comments plugin to keep track of following comments)

email subscription box- got ya! =)

feedburner widget- got ya! =)

Read More Buttons- i know what you mean, that should be easy done, css matter, and jamie is a wizz kid with css to be honest.

plugins- got ya.

and yes (subscribe to comments is a must) makes things easyer for viewers, and gets them coming back to comment.

some ideas from my side, what about integrating ajax comment system with new theme as Ajax is getting popular all the way.

Second good idea is to release different color schemes.

Third idea is to integrate Gravatars with comments

DK

I only hope Dynamic sidebar tabs will be kept. : )

DK

Em, I would like also request a threaded comment template, thanks

Jamie

Thanks so much for all the great ideas!

I had hoped to get soe great feedback but this is outstanding! I didn’t think it would drum up this much debate. Keep those ideas flowing! I can’t wait to get this theme completed!

I’ll be posting a screenie over the next week or so, so keep your eye’s peeled!

1. dynamic side bar is a must and the sidebar width maintained to 300 px
2. threaded comment would be great
3. keep the popular post
4. may be an option to switch between 2 to 3 colums

Hello, Jamie.

I would like to be able to publish images with the dimension of at least 610px wide.
Thank you in advance!

Jamie

Dynamic sidebar will most certainly remain!

I shall look into threaded comments..

Popular post will be maintained via the popularity plugin

I will look into the column based sidebar system. Popular trends suggest the need for big content boxes which then break into 2. I shall look into widgetising the theme to allow this.

As for the images russian the new theme accomodates images up to around 620px.

Keep this up.. outstanding ideas! Its going to be so hard to pick the winners!

Hi Jamie

How about bigger footer to accommodate social widgets like Myblog log and plurk?

Jamie

hi
sunil
great idea, but I have already included that in the design.

i’d love to see thumbnails for previous posts in the sidebar, everything else out there i’ve seen that does this is very kludgy.. appreciated!

Great Jamie

Wodrpess D had smaller image logo

how about bigger logo this time with logo psd for new blogger like who is not very good with photoshop?

and Highlighted Author comment?

So here is another five more- to add in to your Theme.

1. CSS Multi Level Drop-Down Menu in the Header for Page Navigation.
2. Seprate Comments and Trackbacks.(I feel it’s already there)
3. custom pages for archieves, sitemaps, Popular Posts etc…
4. Custom typography styles such as text highlight, notes, download, codes etc…
5. Ability to switch sidebars between left and right.

Jamie

Hi anthony, not sure about the sidebar but the design already has a great feature like this in the footer!

Great idea sunil!.. I shall add the psd for the header into the theme so those using is can easily make their own logo!

As for you arun.. how are you coming up with all these?

Trackbacks and comments are an important focus in this theme they are certainly separated ;),custom pages for archieves, sitemaps, Popular Posts will be included in the theme.

What a notes?

And for you final point. I shall look into this but I cannot promise anything.

Thanks again, I’ll draw the winners soon!

Jamie, Arun means for the notes thing you where saying… like different styles for like download shit

div. notes
lalalala

like to have a background on it like the blockquote box etc.. but with different colors and a wee image to the left of it or something.

Is that what you mean Arun?

@anto
100% right.That’s what I mean.

@jamie
thinking and telling ideas is very easy rather than implementing it.

@jamie
can you made us, a demo page for the Boxy theme now ?
so that we can give more ideas, before releasing it officially!..

Jamie

hi Arun.

Thanks again for all the great ideas!

As for the demo I will get some screenshots of the theme in tonights post so I can see what you guys think before taking of beyond photoshop. I have tried to clear the design of any clutter and make it look even more attractive. After Reading up on the depretiation of the footer I hope I’ve transformed it in to a useful theme. And of course it will all be widgetised.

Looking forward to your reactions later. I shall also be announcing the 2 winners for the best ideas in the next post but keep th critque flowing there will be more entrecard credits up for grabs in the next post.

@Anto

Sorry hadn’t visited in a while and just saw your reply (*hint* subscribe to comments plugin is really good one *end hint*). I was sleepy and far from consistent in that comment. :)

I wanted to say that theme blocks must not be hardcoded into it. For example I want to insert big square block in my sidebar. That shouldn’t ruin the rest of sidebar. And CSS class that formats block with border and rest so I only have to set size would help a lot.

Some themes look great but cost is that they are extremely inflexible with all things glued where designer put them. Personally I like themes that are more minimalistic in looks but flexible.
